So you’re traveling to Nicaragua? You’ve probably heard of Managua (the capital), Leon, Granada, San Juan del Sur, and Montelimar… but have you thought about off the beaten path places like Matagalpa? Nicaragua’s fourth largest city. I can’t lie, my entire family is from this town and I’ve spent many summers and Christmases here. I’m fond of the city and believe that anyone who visits Nicaragua should visit Matagalpa. Is that biased? Oh well.

A couple of things you should know before arriving to Nicaragua:

  1. The main language is Spanish. Many cities and countries are easy to navigate as an English speaker but in Nicaragua and Matagalpa in general – you should up your Spanish game as not many people get by with the English language.
  2. Tourist visas are required upon arrival (I’m only speaking for American citizens). As an American citizen the visa is only $10 USD, so make sure to have some cash on you. They may or may not have change so try to carry the exact amount.
  3. Do not drink the tap water. The first time I visited, I drank the tap water and got a huge lump in my throat. I had to go to the doctor and get huge pills for the lump to go down. Bottled water only.
  4. Taxis are a pain in the ass. Think of an never ending uber pool. You get in and you tell the driver to where and he continues to pick and drop off passengers as he’s making his way to everyone’s destination. Taxi drivers can and will deny you if you are going somewhere that isn’t in their route, so keep that in mind so that you don’t try to catch one when you’re in a rush.

Matagalpa is a two hour drive from the airport in Managua. Having prior transportation planned is helpful. On the other hand, taxi’s are able to drive you but in regards to safety I would suggest to have something planned out. Viator is a good resource to check out your different transportation options.

So now you’re in Matagalpa. What should you do? Here’s your complete list on must do’s in Matagalpa.

1. Eat Fritanga

Nicaraguan food is probably my favorite and hell yes, I am 100% biased. I grew up eating it and when I lived in Miami tried to eat as much as I could. The dishes you HAVE to try are Queso Frito (probably what I recommed you trying out first, its heaven on earth), Gallo Pinto (rice & beans), Carne Asada (grilled meat/steak), and Nacatamal (our bigger and better version of a “tamale”). Other dishes you shouldn’t miss are Baho, Vigoron, and Arroz a la Valenciana.

(The Infamous Nacatamal)

(queso frito or fried cheese… so yummy)

2. Mirador El Calvario

If it’s one thing I have to see when I go anywhere is views! A good view makes any city or town that much better in my book. Mirador El Calvario is easy to get to, hike up isn’t terrible, and you get 360 views of the city below you.

3. Selva Negra

A perfect day trip. Selva Negra is a coffee estate that doubles as a tourist resort. You can go horseback riding, mountain hiking, or even have a nice dinner or lunch on the estate. This spot is super green and serves for the perfect nature fix. It becomes even more calming when there’s a light rain or mist during the day time.

4. Visit Park Rubén Darío

This small but quaint park is in the center of a very busy area in town. You’ll be near coffee shops, shopping stores, grocery stores, and restaurants. Take a stroll or relax and people watch, whatever you do you’ll be surprised to realize how quickly time will go by. The park is also surrounded by food trucks if you don’t want to take a walk to some of the nearby restaurants.

5. Visit San Pedro Cathedral

You don’t have to be religious to enjoy a really classic and historic landmark like cathedrals. From mirador El Calvario you’ll be able to see this all white beaut. Not to mention, it makes for an awesome instagrammable moment. If you do go inside, always keep in mind to stay respectful as it a Catholic establishment.

6. Go Out!

Although Matagalpa isn’t a huge city, you’ll still find awesome places to go out with friends/family + grab a drink. Places like Woods Lounge Bar or Artesanos are always fun and have been around for some time now.

If you’re looking to dig a little deeper into Matagalpa as a city, tours are available. Check out Matagalpa Tours and Keteka for options on tours and other things to do in the city and surrounding areas.

I hope this quick guide to Matagalpa inspires you to visit other parts of Nicaragua and/or gives you something to do if you’re in town for a couple of days. The city is a hidden gem and boasts some of the nicest people I’ve encountered.
